Studio Photography
In the 19th century, hand held and portable cameras had not yet been developed. This means that the only photography in this era is taken in a studio- with large pieces of equipment which was impossible to transport anywhere other then a studio. As photographs needed to be developed after shooting; studios also consisted of a dark room in the 19th century which photographers could then develop their images.
In modern times, studios are created to fulfil purposes such as the Media industry. Although many studios are owned by photographers themselves, lots operate solely as a place for hire. This means even ammeter photographers can shoot in a studio, or those learning. Unless it is of the photographers preference, studios usually don't consist of a dark room as modern photography has swayed toward digital editing in programmes such as photoshop.
In the 19th century, studios were used to photograph mainly portraits. Usually, only important people would have their portrait taken, for example royalty, famous people, in a very formal manor. Nowadays, studios can be used for a range of things such as family portraits, fashion photography, advertising etc. It is far less formal in modern times as it is so widely used.

Documentary photography
Documentary photography is very similar to photojournalism, with the exception that documentary photography can be both artistic and a real life depiction. Photojournalism generally refers to photography for the media such as Newspapers.
Often, documentary photography is also used in magazines, published in books, and different forms of print media. In both forms of photography, the photographer often tries to produce 'candid' photography, which are usually portraits.
An early example of a photographic documentation project was the French Missions Heliographiques which developed an archive of France's rapidly disappearing architectural and human heritage.
Also, photographers have documented events such as the civil war. This was carried out by Timothy O'sullivan and George N. Bernard. The images ranged from battle sites to photographs of the dead.
This is an example of documentary photography which says a lot about its features; the production of an archive of historical significance, and the distribution of it to a wide audience through different kinds of publication.
